Real American Food

W: So, you're from the US, right?

M: Yeah, why do you ask?

W: Well, I'm going to go for a homestay over there, and I'm a bit nervous about the food. All I know about American food, really, is that you guys eat a lot of hamburgers!

M: (Laughs) Actually, my family only eats hamburgers maybe once a month, and usually only when it's warm outside, like on picnics or at restaurants.

W: So, like at McDonald's?

M: No, usually people with small children or college students late at night use McDonald's. I can't actually remember the last time I went to a McDonald's in the States! But I think it was around 3 a.m. when I was with my college friends.

W: Oh well, then, what do you usually eat?

M: This is a really hard question to answer because it varies a lot from family to family. Besides regional variations between different states, you also have a lot of families that still eat traditional food from whatever country their family came from. And on top of that, American's tend to eat a lot of different Americanized foreign food, like Mexican, Italian, and Japanese. But be forewarned: They usually change the food when they import it.

W: That sounds kind of confusing.

M: Well, it's true that American's are quite fond of meat, though it depends on the household for which type of meat is the most popular. Some families like beef, some like pork, others like fowl, and some like fish.

W: So, it's true, then, that a lot of Americans like steak?

M: Yeah. Although my mom doesn't eat steak, my family will have it every once in a while because the rest of my family really loves it.

W: What about other food besides meat? Do you guys eat a lot of vegetables?

M: Once again, that really depends on the household; generally there are at least one or two vegetables per meal, such as a salad or cooked green beans.

W: What about starches? Do Americans ever eat rice?

M: Actually, yes we do. American's probably eat bread or potatoes the most, but pasta and rice are very common and popular. In my household at least, we try to switch every night to a different one.

W: Wow, thanks for the information. I feel a little less anxious. But now I have another problem.

M: What?

W: I'm starting to get hungry! Do you want go get some food?

M: Definitely! Let's go!
