やさしい英語会話 (292) Chicken for Christmas?

Posted by: huepod

Merry Christmas!

Chicken for Christmas?

An American man, who used to live in Japan, and a Japanese woman are in a US restaurant.

M: Hey, what are you going to be doing on Christmas?

W: I'll eat chicken! My family has Kentucky Fried Chicken every year.

M: Ha ha… That's strange! Um, why do Japanese eat chicken on Christmas?

W: Hmm… I don't know…. So, what food do Americans have on Christmas?

M: Uh, our family has turkey, mashed potatoes, and things like that.

W: Oh. Turkey's not so popular in Japan, and you can't really find it in supermarkets. Hey, maybe THAT's why Japanese eat chicken instead of turkey, I think.

M: I see.

W: Yeah, different cultures sure are interesting! When you lived in Japan, did you have any other "strange" cultural experiences?

M: Yeah! In my room, when I asked my friends if they wanted something—for example, soda or tea—they usually answered no. Then, they waited to be asked again, and they said yes. Does it ring a bell?

W: Ha ha… Yeah Japanese want to be modest, and to refrain from bothering the other person.

M: Yeah. In America, "Yes" means yes, and "No" means no. But in Japan…

W: Well, I see that Americans show their feelings more clearly. Um, let's order some food… Let's see… What have we here? Um, I'll have… the steak. What are you going to get?

M: I'll have… spaghetti.

W: OK. Excuse me! (Calling the waitress)

W2: Hi… Are you ready to order?

W: I'll have the steak. And he'll have the ….

M: Oh… wait, wait! Your steak sounds good. Oh… I can't decide!

W: Hey, you said Americans are clear about what they want.

M: Yeah… sorry. But I can't make up my mind about food! Ha ha.
